JULIA MICALLEF
maxSIMhealth
maxSIMhealth is a research laboratory at Ontario Tech University that focuses on developing simulations for healthcare education. I have been apart of this lab for over three years, playing the role as the main additive manufacturing expert. I lead the design, development, and manufacturing for many of the simulators we produce. Through this knowledge, I also play a key role in our additive manufacturing workshops and industry liaison activities which are explained in more detail below. ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING WORKSHOPS
Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal
Workshop/Demonstration
This workshop was done at the Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal to teach a team of surgical residents how to produce their own bile duct and deep suture pad simulators, focusing on how to use 3D printed molds and the ins and outs of silicone.
SHAD Canada
Workshop/Demonstration
SHAD Canada is an organization which is a summer enrichment program for high-school students. I helped organize and run a 3D printing and silicone workshop for the high school students in this program to make their own miniature suture pads at Ontario Tech University.
INDUSTRY LIAISON ACTIVITIES
Laerdal Partnership Meeting
This was a very important meeting between Laerdal Medical and maxSIMhealth to explore potential partnerships. Here, we highlighted our living lab environment and the simulators we have produced. In this meeting, I ran a hands-on demonstration of how we make our mini-suture pads.
E.P. Taylor Legacy Society Event
This activity at maxSIMhealth involved presenting and demonstrating the simulators that we have made as a lab. This event also highlighted our unique living lab environment with the Faculty of Nursing, which I helped to start, where the 3D designers, end-point users, and stakeholders are all co-located to rapidly prototype and co-design simulators to fit in the curriculum.
